How long can house plants go without water?

A plant-by-plant guide to vacation watering — and how a sealed self-watering reservoir keeps plants alive for weeks.

The short answer

Most tropical house plants tolerate 7–10 days without water; succulents and snake plants can go 3–4 weeks; ferns and calatheas often struggle after 4–5 days. Heat, bright light and small pots all shorten the window.

Why plants run dry faster than you think

Water use climbs with light. A pothos in a bright south window can drink twice what the same plant uses in a north room — which is why Plant To Earn measures sunlight alongside soil moisture.

The unattended-watering fix

A soil-moisture sensor paired with a small pump and a sealed reservoir waters only when the soil actually dries out, so a plant receives an appropriate amount of water for the whole time you're away, whether that's days or weeks.

Let the plant tell you

The Plant To Earn Core measures light, moisture, nutrients and soil temperature, and its sealed reservoir waters while you're away.
